A product may be defective through design, manufacturing, or inaccurate marketing. When people are harmed because of a defect, all companies involved with the manufacture, marketing or distribution of the product may become liable. The area of law that addresses this liability is known as product liability.

Examples of product liability are numerous and have touched many industries, including the automotive, pharmaceutical, food, entertainment, and household appliance industries. A case in point is the lawsuit Davis, Bethune & Jones, LLC brought against an automobile manufacturer for a defective roof on a vehicle that collapsed during a rollover, killing the driver. This product liability suit resulted in a settlement of $1 million for the man’s family during the fourth day of trial. Another product liability case resulted in a $$2.25 million verdict from a defective exploding battery that caused a mechanic to suffer eye injury and chemical burns.
